Fayetteville State University Golf

Historical Data since 1970

The most successful athletic program at Fayetteville State University over the years has been golf. Golf was added as a varsity sport in 1970 under the leadership of Raymond McDougal. Since joining the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) the golf teams have won 24 CIAA Championships and four PGA National Minority titles.

Distinguished Golf Events/Accomplishments/Honors


• Dr. Moses Walker won eight CIAA Championships and named CIAA Golf Coach of the year nine-times.

• Willie Carter organized the first competitive Golf program at Fayetteville State University. In 1948 and 1949 he won the Charlotte Golf Tournament with scores of 270 and 280 respectively.

• Andre Springs - NAIA All-American coached Livingstone College to two CIAA Championship (1984 and 1987). He was employed as a Golf Pro at Cleveland Heights Golf Course, Cleveland, Ohio and at Michael Jordan Golf Course in Charlotte, NC.

• Vincent Reid coached at Livingstone College.

• In 1979 Carolyn Jones became the first female to play on an all male Golf team in the CIAA.

• Kenneth Sims, Gary Robinson, and Riccardo Stevens all played the mini-tours. Roger Pilgrim, Attorney at Law, coached in the collegiate ranks... Kenneth Sims was a Golf Pro at Rogers' Golf Course, Miami, FL and played on the PGA Nationwide Tours.

• March 28-29, 1988 Fayetteville State University finished 12th in the 10th Annual Pembroke State University Invitational with a 333-346=679 score. Roger Pilgrim placed 23rd 72-82=158. On April 3-4, 1989, the Broncos placed 19th in the 11th Annual Pembroke University Invitational, posting 349-378=727. Edward Hines was FSU best finisher, placing 67th 77-92=169.

• At the Virginia Union University Invitational held in Richmond in 1989, Fayetteville State University finished first in a field of six teams. The event was cut short due to weather. Roger Pilgrim was FSU best with an 84 score.

• At South Carolina State College Oliver C. Dawson Invitational held April 7-9, 1989 at the Hillcreat Golf Course, Fayetteville State University finished 14th in a field of 14, scoring 334-352=696 over the two day event. Roger Pilgrim fired an 80-81=163.
