Fayetteville State University Tennis
Historical Data since 2002
All of us live our lives according to the character within us, whether we are conscious of it or not.
Character is the direct results of our values personified and thus the way we act is simply an extension of the way we think. To respect an opponent on the athletic field is to show a general respect for that opponent as a person; to undercut and malign that opponent is to show the opposite (Bess Watson, NCAA News, 2003).
There is photograph evidence that women's tennis existed at Fayetteville Normal State School as early as 1912 and also when Fayetteville State University (formerly Fayetteville State College) was a member of the North Carolina Athletic Conference (NCAC) in the early '30's. In the `80's, women participated in the men's program, however, records and standings were not maintain for the women.
In 2002 Fayetteville State University and other Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) institutions committed to adding women's bowling as a varsity sport, a first for the conference. Under the leadership of Elorine Hill, the Lady Broncos won the inaugural CIAA Women's Tennis Championship and a berth in the NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Region by outlasting Johnson C. Smith 67-52.
