FAYETTEVILLE STATE TO HOLD A CEREMONY FOR 2007 CIAA CHAMPIONS



A recognition and banner ceremony will be held for the championship teams (Golf, Tennis, Volleyball, and Bowling) during halftime of the men's basketball game on Saturday, January 26th

Fayetteville, NC - On Saturday, January 26, 2008, Fayetteville State University will honor its 2007 CIAA Women's Bowling, Tennis, Volleyball, and Men's Golf Champions. A recognition and banner ceremony will be held during halftime of the men's basketball game between the Broncos and St. Paul's College. Game-time is scheduled for 7:30 pm in the Felton J. Capel Arena.

Men's Golf

On April 20, 2007, Fayetteville State University captured its seventh consecutive CIAA Golf Championship in Fort Lee, VA. By the tournament conclusion, the Broncos were also deemed the CIAA Eastern and Western Division Champions.

Five of the six golfers shot under 80 rounds on consecutive days. The All CIAA Golf Team consisted of 2006 CIAA Individual Winner senior Ian Milne, junior Derek Scott, and sophomore Joel Lynn. Head Coach Raymond McDougal was named the CIAA Golf Coach of the Year. It was the 11th time Coach has received this honor from the coaches association. McDougal has also been named Coach of the Year from 1993 through 2002.

Women's Tennis

On April 22, 2007, the Lady Broncos Tennis Team captured its fifth CIAA Title at the Sixth Annual Tennis Tournament in Petersburg, VA. Freshman Ines Nieves, sophomore Constance Lee, junior Shayla Watson, freshman Contessa Sanchez, and junior Arie Bennett won their respective singles.

These Lady Broncos also went undefeated in Doubles play. Nieves was named Tournament MVP and CIAA Player of the Year. Head Coach Elorine Hill was honored Coach of the Year by the CIAA Tennis Coaches Association.

Women's Volleyball

On November 10, 2007, the Lady Broncos swept Bowie State University 30-21, 30-18, and 30-27 for the 2007 CIAA Volleyball Championship Title in Charlotte, NC. Sophomore Chekimbrell Jefferson, freshman Achari Mainor, and senior Sha'Quana Veney were selected to the All Tournament Team.
 

 

Jefferson was named the tournament's MVP and the conference Player of the Year. Seven member of the team was garnered All-CIAA honors; Jefferson, Mainor, Veney, were joined by freshman Samantha Meeks, junior Shatia Gidrey, junior Heather Chance, and senior Cassandra Peterson. Head Coach Elorine Hill reached her 300th victory plateau and was named the CIAA Volleyball Coach of the Year.

Women's Bowling

On November 14, 2007, Fayetteville State captured its first CIAA Women's Bowling Championship. Advancing through the Loser's Bracket, FSU eliminated the defending champs Bowie State in the semi-finals.

The Lady Broncos then defeated St. Paul's in a double elimination Baker Match. Freshman Danielle Fesco and freshman Akira Turner were named to the All-CIAA Team along with Tournament MVP Jessica Donnelly (a junior from Fayetteville, NC). Donnelly was All-CIAA in 2005 and 2006. Head Coach Bobby Henderson was honored with his first CIAA Bowling Coach of the Year award by the coaches association.
